I’m not happy with b2evolution’s out-of-the-box anti-spam protection. Too much spam gets through, and I end up wasting time on cleaning it off my site when I could be working on Gentoo instead.
I’ve hardened my local copy of b2evolution with the following hacks and plugins:
- CAPTCHA support on images, from village-idiot.org.
- IP-blacklist filtering, from kwa.
- Mass spam rechecking, originally from Isaac Schleuter (and integrated into b2evo by me)
- Deny access to all pages for referer spammers, also by Isaac Schleuter
- Bad Behaviour support, also from kwa
I have also added a hack to support Technorati tags.
I’ll see how well these additions do over the next few days, and if there’s any interest, I’ll add them to Gentoo’s b2evolution ebuild.

Great work Stuart, those sure seem intersting and I’d like to see those additions in the Gentoo b2evo ebuild! Maybe I’ll change from Wordpress over to b2evo then…

In fact, I’m not the original author of Bad Behavior / Bad Behaviour. I’ve just added support for b2evolution to the original code by Michael Hampton.
Moreover, the IP-blacklist filtering
is inspired by John Sinteur’s Block-lists anti-spam measures WordPress plug-in.
There are some other ideas to be added to b2evolution (as suggested in Request for The Ultimate Antispam Plug-in or Hack) to make it SPAM-free. However, the patches you’ve included should block most of the currently encountered SPAM. Nice work!

All I did was take the code already contributed by people like yourself, and roll it up into a single patch. You guys did all the nice work

Hello.
I Tried the patch and got several Hunk #1, #2, #3 errors on several operations. It eneded up saving some files as .rej
Any reason for this you can think of?

I search the web for web sites and blogs with good to great contant and you’re site by far has proven to be great reading, so please don’t stop you’re doing great.
