Frustration w/ Tree Breakage

This morning’s work on the ebuild for the 2X Linux Terminal Server has been a mixture of creating a basic ebuild to build the package, and then swearing profusely at trying to get the deps built out of Portage.

And, to cap it off, I can’t even file bugs to let the teams know about their broken packages because of our ongoing Bugzilla problems.

Mornings like this make me wonder why I’m still spending time on Gentoo; and that’s before you throw in other frustrations like the mess that the previous Trustees left the Foundation in. I know I’m not exactly in a calm mood right now, but I’m so annoyed with the (in)actions of the previous Trustees that part of me wishes that we could bar the lot of them from ever being Trustees again on the grounds of maladministration.

The rest of me just wish that folks wouldn’t take up for the post of Trustee unless they really understood that the role first and foremost is about good administration. The folks who want to go on a power trip should stick to being on the Council.

Oi. I object to the notion that folks on a power trip belong in Council. I’m here for the technical development of Gentoo.

Anybody on a power trip doesn’t really belong leading any of the Gentoo groups. Just look at what happened when zwelch went on his power trip (he got a dressing-down from drobbins), and then he forked a few months later because he was unhappy (the fork then bombed).

Yeah, I remember those days too (they’re the reason I became a dev). And I don’t want folks on a power trip anywhere near the Gentoo Council.

Or anywhere near our core tools.

Well, I’ll admit that the trustee’s were a bit missive with some things that should of been taken of. However, the banning to lot of them is a bit of an overkill. Mostly because the vast majority of gentoo developers don’t want to do the administration part.It really is the quite menial boring monotonous part that no one likes to deal with. The members did do a few things during their tenure but I would say that a lot was dropped or not bothered to be handled…even when I pushed buttons to get action.

I’m hoping the new members will do better, but time will tell and I know a few that are motivated to get some of what needs to be done, actually done. Its been quite honestly, a combination of thoses on it that are motivated with others who arn’t members collecting information that have gotten information collected about the status of various options we have.

However writing them all off as a lot is a wonderful generalization that is simple and easy to do. Just remember that if you speak up in such a way someone is going to expect you to take the reigns and show a difference.

    Hi Joshua,

I don’t think that “a bit missive” comes anywhere near the mark. They volunteered to be Trustees. If they didn’t want to do the work, they shouldn’t have taken on the role.

Folks following gentoo-nfp can see that the new Trustees are currently working out what needs to be done, so that we can address all these issues.

If you’re aware of issues that you haven’t seen the new Trustees mention on gentoo-nfp, please let us know asap.

    Best regards,
    Stu

I think that what you’re decrying as a power trip would be better described as merely administrative incompetence. As far as I know, nobody who was a trustee the last time around took the position for glory. That doesn’t absolve us of blame, of course.

I have to admit from a user’s perspective I have liked Gentoo. Though I have found at times that things have felt a miss. Though I don’t wish to get into that argument.

I have great intrest in getting a NX server running on my amd64 box and would be willing to debug and work through things if you would like the help.
