I think I\’ve managed only one lesson with my students since returning from speaking at the php|cruise at the start of March. Me bad ;-)

Today\’s Additions To webapp-config 1.9dev

I\’ve added one new feature to webapp-config-1.9dev today.

  • emerge -C will try to remove all virtual copies of the package before removing the master copy

I\’ve also updated webapp-config so that it won\’t abort part-way through an installation any more. This is by popular request. Unfortunately, this does mean that webapp-config will now happily delete and overwrite any files it comes across that are in the way of the install. webapp-config v2 will feature a true preview, so that webapp-config won\’t start writing files at all until it\’s confident of 100% success.

I\’ve also fixed webapp-config –list-installs so that it works when you don\’t use wildcards. Doh!

That still leaves three major features to add before webapp-config 1.9 is released. Drop-in support for webserver conf files is next. I\’m leaving the pkg_webapp_install() hook until last.

Best regards,
Stu

Yesterday\’s Additions To webapp-config 1.9dev

Two bug fixes, and a small enhancement yesterday:

  • ebuilds that use webapp.eclass will refuse to even attempt to install if the target directory has something in it that hasn\’t been put there by webapp-config.
  • webapp.eclass could sometimes accidentally remove a previously-installed directory under /usr/share/webapps/$PN when it shouldn\’t. This has been fixed.
  • if USE=-vhosts, webapp.eclass will call emerge -C old-package to tidy up after itself. That just leaves hooking into emerge -C to tidy up when USE=vhosts. Speaking of which …

There\’s still quite a few things to add to webapp-config v1.9 before it is released.

Best regards,
Stu

Dell Technical Support: Part 4

Well, one new motherboard later, and the laptop appears to be working great. It now boots when I press the power switch, and the annoying problem with the USB ports seems to have gone (haven\’t hooked it up to the external hard drive yet for the definitive test, mind).

Interestingly, both Kristi and I would swear that it\’s running even quieter, and the power consumption seems to be lower too. I guess the faulty component was eating more power than it should have been.

All I have to do now is figure out which piece of software has grabbed ALT+F5 (/me looks suspiciously at the ATI drivers), and I\’m a happy bunny. Over the weekend, I\’ll post some of the reasons why I think the Dell Inspiron 8600 is a good laptop.

I actually added them last night, but I fell asleep before I could put the word about :)

All the server ebuilds are in Portage. I\’ll do the client ebuild sometime Saturday, along with the NX HOWTO document. There\’s a press release from NX here too.

Best regards,
Stu
