I have early memories of my mum using the counter service in this Post Office, so it must have been operational until at least the mid 70s, although I don’t know exactly when it closed. The building was breathed new life in the mid 1990s when BT leased some of the floors as an over-spill from next-door Stadium House, hence the link bridge put in place between both buildings. Other companies leased floor space too, but I think they’ve all recently vacated. The lobby retains its original features including chandelier, and – thanks to the sign above the door – people still pop in to try and buy stamps! The building adjacent to this – corner of Park Street and Westgate Street – is now the Cardiff Civil Justice Centre, but housed the original telephone exchange before it was replaced by the now-demolised Empire House telephone exchange further down Park Street. So I guess this is quite an historic General Post Office site for both telephone and mail services.
