The Trees Behind The Fence

My desktop wallpaper today continues my theme celebrating the magical Beyond The Border international storytelling festival. (If you’ve never been, the next one is in 2012).

Part of the magic of the Beyond The Border festival is the walk to and from the camping field (which doubles as the festival car park). The walk takes you under trees and through a field and down the hill towards Atlantic College and the Jousting Field.

The trees are somehow bewitching, and every year that I go I make a new attempt at capturing their magic. This year, by chance I picked the one day where the light was utterly flat, which I think has created an image where the eye is drawn to the detail trailing off into the distance because the colours are so uniform.

Lighting The Way Home

This week’s theme is the wonderful and magical Beyond The Border international storyteller festival, which has just finished another fantastic run in the grounds of St. Donats Arts Centre and Atlantic College in the Vale of Glamorgan. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been time yet to process this year’s photos, so to start the week off (and inspire me with the memory of camping from last time, in 2007) I’m spending the day looking at this shot of one of the light bulbs strung up amongst the trees to light the way between camp and festival.

I’ll be back tomorrow with my choice of photos from 2010 Beyond The Border.

Converging Lines

UWIC Over Western Avenue

UWIC (the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff) is a modern University founded in 1996 in Cardiff. It can trace its roots back to the School of Art, which opened in the Old Free Library building back in 1865.

Today, it has several campuses around Cardiff, including this one on Western Avenue opposite Pontcanna Fields. Western Avenue, as part of the A48, is one of the major dual carriageways through Cardiff, making it too busy to cross to and from the campus without assistance. There are several pedestrian crossings, and this (presumably older) footbridge, which caught my eye because of the unusual double sets of steps leading it up to it.

Barred Gate To Pontcanna

They *really* don’t want anyone to go through this gate. I guess the pedestrians became a nuisance once the initial gate stopped cyclists from going anywhere 🙂

(Look closely at the gate and you’ll see that a metal bar has been placed over the top of the two poles, just in case someone incredibly thin had been squeezing through the very narrow gap).

Kitchen Tap

My final choice of desktop wallpaper this week is this abstract shot of our kitchen sink’s tap. If you look closely enough, you’ll spot my camera in there too 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this week’s desktop wallpaper; I certainly had a lot of fun putting this set together for you. I’ll be back on Monday with another set for you to enjoy.

Lamp And Bushes Beside Cathays Station

The main entrance to Cathays Station is from the alleyway that runs behind Cardiff University. This combination of blue skies, rubbery-green leaves and a streetlight caught my attention.

Cactus

My choice of desktop wallpaper today is this abstract shot of a cactus plant on the window ledge. Some of the hairs you can see in this photo are from one of our cats, who seems utterly oblivious to the concept that cacti are sharp and spiky plants best not brushed against!
