Abandoned Fence Post

Seen during a recent visit to Tonteg Junction, a former railway route converted into the Church Village bypass.

At the time of publishing, Google Maps still shows Tonteg Junction as it was before the construction of the bypass began.

Lead-Framed Glass

My theme this week is “Five Windows”, a small collection of photos of windows taken during our holiday in Berwick-upon-Tweed in 2010.

This is one of the windows from the Church of St Peter at Chillingham, a small church dating back to Norman times. When you first enter the church, one is struck by its simplicity and tidiness. There’s little evidence of the steady stream of visitors through its door, nor the magnificent reason why that’s hidden around the corner just out of sight.

The Toll Of Time

My theme this week is “Five Windows”, a small collection of photos of windows taken during our holiday in Berwick-upon-Tweed in 2010.

This is one of the windows from the Church of St Peter at Chillingham, a small church dating back to Norman times. From the outside, the church itself looks very small and modest, and is reached by following a small path through a walled gate from the lane beyond. It is set in a small and well-tended churchyard, resplendent in late summer with its green grass. There’s no hint at all of the wonders waiting inside.

Silhouetted Window Frame

My theme this week is “Five Windows”, a small collection of photos of windows taken during our holiday in Berwick-upon-Tweed in 2010.

This is one of the windows from the Church of St Peter at Chillingham, a small church dating back to Norman times. We were there to visit the Chillingham cattle, an isolated herd of cattle that are sometimes described as the closest living survivors of the now-extinct aurochs. Whilst we were waiting for the cattle tour to begin, we struck up a conversation with the chairman of the Chillingham Wild Cattle Association, and he directed us to the other end of the lane where we were parked, and the church that lay beyond.

In the summer of 2009, Mrs H and I went on an ill-fated fortnight’s holiday in beautiful North Wales, basing ourselves just outside of Barmouth. Although some of the photos I took that fortnight have featured in my desktop wallpaper series, this is the first time that I’ve pulled together all the shots taken on holiday by theme.

Our route back from Llangollen took us past three wind turbines, and they were close enough to the road that I just had to try my hand at photographing them.

Statue On The Scott Monument

My theme last week and this is the wonderfully gothic Scott Monument in Edinburgh, a memorial to the great writer Sir Walter Scott, who died in 1832.

To bring the theme to an end, here’s another shot of one of the many statues on the Scott Monument. I’d love to be able to spend a whole day in Edinburgh, just to shoot all of the statues on all sides of the building in the best possible light … and to go up and shoot from the viewing platforms inside the monument itself. Maybe a summer treat for myself next year?

I hope you’ve enjoyed these photos of the Scott Monument. It’s a magnificent sight, dominating one of the main shopping streets of the city. Has it inspired you to go to Edinburgh (probably the most beautiful of the UK’s capital cities) to visit the monument in person?

I’ll be back next week with a new theme. I haven’t decided what yet 🙂
