Statue On The Scott Monument

My theme this week is the wonderfully gothic Scott Monument in Edinburgh, a memorial to the great writer Sir Walter Scott, who died in 1832.

The statues on the Scott Monument are mostly based on characters from his writings. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to recognise this statue from the Scott Monument Virtual Tour website. If you know who this statue is, please leave a comment below.

Looking Out Over Edinburgh

My theme this week is the wonderfully gothic Scott Monument in Edinburgh, a memorial to the great writer Sir Walter Scott, who died in 1832.

What would it be like to switch places with this statue, to spend the day just standing there, staring out over the beautiful city of Edinburgh?

Gothic Griffin On The Scott Monument

My theme this week is the wonderfully gothic Scott Monument in Edinburgh, a memorial to the great writer Sir Walter Scott, who died in 1832.

Just as the gothic dragon looks out one way over the city of Edinburgh, this equally wonderful gothic dragon looks out from one of the other corners. I don’t know about you, but I reckon he’s on the lookout for who to eat next :)

Sir Walter Scott

My theme this week is the wonderfully gothic Scott Monument in Edinburgh, a memorial to the great writer Sir Walter Scott, who died in 1832.

At the base of the Scott Monument is this beautiful white Carrara marble statue of Sir Walter Scott and his dog Maida, made by Scottish sculpture Sir John Steell.

In the summer of 2009, Mrs H and I went on an ill-fated fortnight’s holiday in beautiful North Wales, basing ourselves just outside of Barmouth. Although some of the photos I took that fortnight have featured in my desktop wallpaper series, this is the first time that I’ve pulled together all the shots taken on holiday by theme.

The Horseshoe Pass lies to the north of Llangollen, and stands out for this massive slate pile that is hunkered down right beside the road. There’s a little lay-by at the far end of the pass, where you can leave the car and walk down the grass verges on foot (watching out for passing traffic, which screams by at quite a pace!) to investigate.

The Morgan Arcade

Completed in 1899, and originally called the New Central Arcade, the Morgan Arcade was built to connect the famous (and now sadly gone) David Morgan Department Store in the Hayes with another of David Morgan’s stores opened on St Mary’s Street.

Gothic Dragon On The Scott Monument

My theme this week is the wonderfully gothic Scott Monument in Edinburgh, a memorial to the great writer Sir Walter Scott, who died in 1832.

High up on one of the corners of the Scott Monument is this beautiful gothic-style dragon gargoyle, looking out over the city. I wonder what he is thinking?

I hope you’ve enjoyed my shots of the Scott Monument this week. I have more of them to share with you next week.

Royal London Mutual Insurance Society Ltd

Amazingly, the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society Ltd still exists today, and is still a mutual society offering insurance policies. They still have an office in Cardiff, out at the Cardiff Gate business park by Junction 30 of the M4.

Seen on St Mary’s Street, Cardiff.

Statue On The Scott Monument

My theme this week is the wonderfully gothic Scott Monument in Edinburgh, a memorial to the great writer Sir Walter Scott, who died in 1832.

The sides of the Scott Monument are covered with statues of characters from his writings. Unfortunately, I couldn’t spot an exact match for this statue on the monument’s website; perhaps it is Friar Tuck?
