This week’s theme is Tantallon Castle, on the Scottish coastline in East Lothian just outside North Berwick. We visited it in September 2010 whilst exploring the coastline north of Berwick upon Tweed, and we were instantly captivated by its wonderful setting on the coast with the backdrop of Bass Rock.
Once you are past the curtain wall, and into the courtyard, one of the striking sights is the huge well sunk into the open floor. It is extremely easy to imagine many a soldier, drunk and wandering around, having tripped over the low lip only to disappear head-first into the blackness – or many a tourist, come to think of it. No wonder there’s a substantial metal grill over it today!
